Book Update: New Title! Publication Date!
I've been waiting (not so patiently) to share some book news with you!
My book, UP TO SPEED: The Groundbreaking Science of Women Athletes, will be out on May 16, 2023! GAH!!
I got an initial look at the book in layout and was a little overwhelmed when I first scrolled through the sample pages. It looks like an actual book, a real book. Sometimes I have a hard time believing that I actually created this thing.
For those of you who have been around here for a bit, you may have noticed that the title has changed. I loved WOMAN UP as a title for this project because it was punny and felt empowering, but it was always meant to be working title. I knew that was a good chance that the title would change during the editing/publication process, and I trusted the advice and instincts of my team at Riverhead. Part of the reason for the change was the concern that by playing off the phrase "man up," the title still subtly places women relative to men and the male norm—the exact opposite message I hope this book conveys.
Nine months—nine months!—and this book will finally be out in the world. I cannot even tell you how excited I am. Don't get me wrong. I'm terrified too because it means that this thing that I've been working on for the last two years, this thing that I've poured my heart and soul into, this thing that I've obsessed over, will be in other people's hands. It won't be just mine anymore.
In the meantime, here's a description of what you'll find in the book:
Over the last fifty years, women have made extraordinary advances in athletics. More women than ever are playing sports and staying active longer. Whether they’re elite athletes looking for an edge or enthusiastic amateurs, women deserve a culture of sports that helps them thrive: training programs and equipment designed to work with their bodies, as well as guidelines for nutrition and injury prevention that are based in science and tailored to their lived experience.
Yet too often the guidance women receive is based on research that fails to consider their experiences or their bodies. So much of what we take as gospel about exercise and sports science is based solely on studies of men.
The good news is, this is finally changing. Researchers are creating more inclusive studies to close the gender data gap. They’re examining the ways women can boost athletic performance, reduce injury, and stay healthy.
Sports and health journalist Christine Yu disentangles myth and gender bias from real science, making the case for new approaches that can help women athletes excel at every stage of life, from adolescence to adulthood, through pregnancy, menopause, and beyond. She explains the latest research and celebrates the researchers, athletes, and advocates pushing back against the status quo and proposing better solutions to improve the active and athletic lives of women and girls.
I can't wait for you to read it.
Christine
