Endless Winter
{Dreaming of sunnier and warmer California days.}
Well, they said that there would be six more weeks of winter (Thanks, Punxsutawney Phil) and they weren’t kidding. While I can normally suck it up during the colder months, I think I finally hit my breaking point this week. I’m done with winter.
Finis.
Finito.
DONE.
Spring's just around the corner, right??
The cold, windy weather has made running not so fun. (I’m training for the Broad Street Run in early May.) Treadmill miles make me want to gauge my eyes out and tempo runs into a headwind are not my jam. It’s been hard to motivate myself to get out the door. Also hard? Doing real workouts after months and months of easy running. It’s been a humbling two weeks, to say the least.
But, next time I'm struggling, I'm going to think about this little girl. Talk about determination.
What I’ve Written
I wrote about feet for the April issue of Outside. Yup, feet. Most of us don’t spend much time thinking about them, but they may be the secret to a healthy (injury-free) body and better performance.
On the food front, do you need new snack ideas? Here’s your cheat sheet on healthy (and filling) ones. My editor also asked me to eat egg whites for breakfast for two weeks and write about it. All in the name of journalism, right?
What I’ve Been Reading
Across the country, students walked out of school on Wednesday to protest against gun violence. I know that there are debates about whether schools should support the walkout or not but regardless, it’s heartening to see kids and young adults speak up. The New York Times and The Atlantic published some moving photos from the day.
When a Stress Expert Battles Mental Illness (Outside): Stress expert Brad Stulberg wrote about his battle with anxiety and depression. It’s an important piece that gives a glimpse into what it feels like to struggle with mental illness. I’m glad that more people are speaking openly about mental health issues and we need to continue these conversations.
Jerry and Marge Go Large (Highline): This story reads like a movie. It’s about how a former cereal box designer figured out a loophole in the Michigan (then Massachusetts) lotto game and won $27 million over nine years. Not a bad retirement plan.
Overlooked No More: Alison Hargreaves (The New York Times): This month, the New York Times has started adding stories of overlooked women to its obituaries, which has historically been dominated by white men. In 1995, Hargreaves became the first woman in history to conquer Mount Everest alone and without bottle oxygen. She died months later while descending K
The Arctic Helped Me Heal After the Death of My Brother (Outside): An incredibly moving essay about siblings, love, loss, grief, and healing.
The Last Jedi's Kelly Marie Tran Has a Story to Tell (GQ): I loved Rose in The Last Jedi!
Runners Are Using Weed to Make Long Runs Less Miserable (TONIC): Maybe I should smoke some weed?
