Hello December
Happy Week-After-Thanksgiving!
And just like that we’re in full-on holiday mode, complete with crazy to-do lists, impending deadlines, jam-packed schedules, and travel travel travel. How did that happen?
We hosted Thanksgiving in my house for the first time. 25-ish of my family members packed into my little Brooklyn apartment for a Chinese-American Thanksgiving feast—turkey + sticky rice stuffing, smashed sweet potatoes, egg rolls, braised spare ribs, brussels sprouts and bacon—you know, traditional fare.
One of the best parts of the long weekend? Disconnecting from social media. I didn’t realize how nice it was until I opened Twitter and was greeted with a feed full of hyped up, antagonistic energy that honestly didn’t make me feel good. Sometimes Twitter makes me feel like my brain is rotting, yet I can’t seem to let go of it. Plus, sometimes I feel like it’s the only way I can keep up with this crazy news cycle.
What I’ve Written
Just in time for the holiday season, here’s one on how to survive those toxic family interactions. Have you ever wondered when you should drop the L-O-V-E word with your partner? Here’s the science behind those heady days of young love. For the postpartum moms out there, here are some exercises to help rebuild your strength and the truth behind mom brain. And, as if you need another reason to stress about the amount of stress in your life, here are five more.
What I'm Reading
Here are some of the stories I've been reading lately.
Don’t Care About Sexual Harassment? Don’t Read Outside (Outside) << This. I have never seen a response like this. It makes me proud to write for Outside.
Every Parent Wants to Protect Their Child. I Never Got the Chance (The Cut) << A heartbreaking love story about a mother and son, a son she shouldn’t have had.
Why Running Needs a Shalane vs. Jordan Showdown (Outside) << YES PLEASE!
How the “Shalane Flanagan Effect” Works (NY Times) << In other words, how to boost the careers of women around you while rocketing yourself forward (without tearing others down in the process).
Bobby Clay—My Osteoporosis Nightmare (Athletics Weekly) << I’ve written a bit on the female athlete triad and I’m glad more athletes are sharing their story. Bobby is 20 years old and has osteoporosis.
Sisters in Sweat << Amazing message from Serena Williams to her daughter (and all of us).
This is How You Pick Up a Phone (NY Times) << A beautiful and heart wrenching account of a changing relationship between an aging mother and daughter.
The Problem With ‘New’ Taylor Swift Is That Nothing’s Changed (Glamour) << “It's an especially tone-deaf play at a moment when women—both famous and not—are risking very real things to truly rebel.”
Jodi Kantor (Longform Podcast) << OK, not exactly reading but this interview is worth listening to if you have an interest in journalism. Jodi talks about the Weinstein stories that she and her partner Megan broke.
The Best Responses to Every Weird Cycling Question Your Family Will Ask You This Thanksgiving (Bicycling) << Because it’s still the holiday season and whether you bike or run or [insert sport here], your family will likely ask you awkward questions about your sport.
What I’ve Been Watching
Or not watching as the case may be. You guys, I need some suggestions for good TV shows! I’ve started a few but nothing has really hooked me. I started the second season of Stranger Things but, since my husband won’t watch it with me and I can’t watch it by myself at night (hi nightmares), I have to watch during the day, which would kill my already lagging motivation to work.
Suggestions? What are some of your favorite shows?
Did I miss something? Reply to this email or tweet me a link! P.S. I'd love to hear what you think and if you have any suggestions. If you have any ideas, hit me up!
