🚨 I'm Writing a Book!!
Hi friends.Â
That about sums it up, doesn't it?
It feels like we’ve lived many lifetimes in the past eight months or so and we've all probably experienced some form of news-related whiplash.Â
It also explains my absence from here. With so much going on and so much noise online, the last thing anyone needed was a newsletter from me sharing some random thoughts and my favorite articles and podcasts. No one needed that clogging up their inbox.Â
But I do have news to share. I've been waiting for everything to be finalized but now that the contract is signed, it's official. I’m writing a book!!Â
The working title is Woman Up: The New Science of the Female Athlete. It’s a narrative nonfiction book on women in sports and the science behind their athletic performance. It looks at the under-representation of women in sports science research, how we arrived at a sports science model that defaults to male bodies, and the amazing research that is currently going on to bridge the gap and help women train and perform better, prevent injuries, and stay in sport in a healthy way. The book is geared towards all active women of all ages. It will be published by Riverhead Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House at a date TBD. All I know is that my manuscript is due summer 2021—yikes!
The book also incorporates a lot of stories and this is where I could use your help. I'm looking for female athletes with stories to share where the female experience isn't normalized. If you have a story to share or a suggestion for someone I should speak with, please reply to this email!
Here's some of what I'm looking for:
Challenges with fueling or nutrition, have dealt with injury (specifically bone/tendon injuries, knee injuries), or have either experienced menstrual cycle dysfunction or low energy availability
Stories about training through pregnancy and during the postpartum period
Stories of women who are just really tuned into your cycle in general and how it affects your training
Stories about training and competing through perimenopause and menopause
Good examples of gear made specifically for women that actually works really well for women
If you're a parent of a young girl who's super active in sports, I want to talk to you too!
If you want to hear a little more about the book, where the idea came from, and how I got my start as a freelance journalist, you can hear all about it here on this episode of the Ali on the Run Show. it was fun being Ali’s guest and a little weird being on the other side of the questions! I can't wait to share more along the way.
I'm really excited about the crop of women's sports books coming out in the next couple of years especially from Lauren Fleshman, Alison Mariella Désir on, and Lindsey Gibbs. So much good stuff on the way!
Thanks so much for reading.Â
Christine
