Is this thing on?
Back in September when I decided to say farewell to my blog, I mentioned I was toying with the idea of starting an email newsletter. Well, here it is!
My plan for this newsletter is to share some of the things I've been reading, listening to, and working on a la my old Friday Round-Ups on the blog but on a bi-weekly basis. (Or maybe monthly? I haven't figured that part out yet.) I promise to keep these emails relatively short and succinct.
If you're wondering why in the world you're receiving this email, it's because you previously signed up to receive email updates from my blog—Love, Life, Surf. If you're not interested in receiving this email newsletter, you can unsubscribe down at the bottom of the page.
West Texas Dispatches
I'm slightly obsessed with Friday Night Lights, the TV show about life, family and football in a little town in West Texas. Aside from the dramatic storylines, I've been fascinated with the landscape. So when my best friend (who lives in Austin) suggested a road trip to Marfa, I couldn't say no. But I wasn't sure what to expect of this high desert town pretty much in the middle of nowhere in West Texas. It's received a ton of buzz over the past few years and I was afraid it wasn't going to live up to my expectations.
You guys, I kind of fell in love. We saw amazing art at The Chinati Foundation that seriously defies words. It's been a really long time since I've been moved by a work of art but the works by Donald Judd and Robert Irwin left me with all the feels. Since the area around Marfa has some of the least light pollution, we went stargazing at the McDonald Observatory one night and it was magical, a blanket of stars overhead, Saturn, and shooting stars. I wish we had more time to explore Big Bend National Park. Next time.
What I've Written
Since this is the first newsletter and all, I want to share some of the fun stories I've worked on recently. I'm most proud of this story on the female athlete triad, which was published on Outside back in September. It's a follow-up to a story I wrote back in May, digging into the reasons why female runners lose their periods. I even got to talk about it on NPR!
Other things I've written recently: a profile on Julie Menin, Commissioner of the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment, and her quest to bring the Grammy's back to New York City for Columbia College Today (my alma mater!), natural ways to nix heartburn for the November / December issue of Eating Well Magazine (on newsstands now!), how having (or not having) sex affects your social life, emotional intelligence, the school garden boom in New York City, whether HIIT can give you the same high as running, and—my personal fave—the 4 big mistakes you're making with your avocado toast.
What I'm Reading
I have to admit, with all the heavy and depressing news in the news cycle, I haven't wanted to read much online. And opening Twitter or Facebook? I pretty much want to run away and bury my head under a pillow. But hard times often inspire great writing.
Me Too: How Climbing the Mountain I Dreaded Helped Me Confront My Past Abuse (Bicycling)
How These Two Women Finally Exposed Harvey Weinstein (Marie Claire)
Women Aren't Nags—We're Just Fed Up (Harper's Bazaar)
A Surfer's Love Letter to the Inexhaustibly Wild Ocean Beach (San Francisco Magazine)
The California Nonprofit Teaching Brown Women How to Find Freedom in the Water (Fader)
I also recently finished Celeste Ng's second book, Little Fires Everywhere. I loved her first book, Everything I Never Told You, this one left me feeling a bit meh. Next, I'm reading The Woman Who Smashed Codes, a nonfiction book about Elizebeth Smith, one of the country's greatest code breakers.
