It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year: NYC Marathon Weekend
Yes, it’s true. Marathon Sunday is my favorite day of the year. The energy is pretty infectious and it feels like the entire city comes out to cheer the thousands of runners who choose to run through the five boroughs.
And all eyes seem to be on the women’s race this year. Can Shalane defend her title? Will Des follow-up her Boston win with one in Central Park? Can Allie Kieffer find magic in NYC again? Plus, there’s Steph Bruce, Molly Huddle, and Sarah Sellers—it’s a stacked field. I can’t wait.
On Wednesday, I heard Des Linden speak at a Brooks event and she talked about her training leading up to NYC, about why she’s still hungry and thinks of herself as an underdog, and why she keeps showing up for herself.
She also talked a bit about why she thinks run squads like the Hansons-Brooks team and the Bowerman Track Club are the best. Teammates building each other up creates more depth in the field of running. And from depth comes more breakthroughs. Des says that it feels like one big American group when they line up together on the start line.
FYI: Here’s a great profile of Des in this month’s Runner’s World.
What I’ve Written
I dove into the world of CBD and whether it can (or can’t) help with for anxiety for the Eating Well magazine (Nov/Dec 2018 issue) and explored the world of urban axe throwing venues that are popping up all over the place. I also wrote about what you should eat post-workout, things you can do every day for a healthy heart, poop, and this breakdown of 10 popular types of yoga.
My favorite piece was this: Wading in a Cranberry Bog Was the Therapeutic Experience I Didn’t Know I Needed for SELF.
What I’ve Been Reading
There There: This book was stunning. It weaves together the stories of several Native Americans living in Oakland, CA, grappling with family, addiction, violence, and what it means to belong.
Marriage Vacation: This book is the opposite of There There. It was born from the TV show Younger—it’s “written” by one of the characters on the show. It’s light, silly and a little self-indulgent but a quick read.
Race of a Lifetime (espnW): While you’ve probably seen this story in the New York Times about how Allie Kieffer has exceeded expectations by breaking the rules, this story in the espnW takes a closer look at her life and training since last year’s NYC Marathon.
Dear Runner’s World, Women’s Health & Amanda McCracken (SISU Performance PT): Speaking of expectations, this piece tears down a recent story on Runner's World for perpetuating the narrative that women’s bodies are fragile and the source of our problems and injury.
Hundreds of Asian Women Dressed as Lara Jean from 'TATBILB' (VICE): FINALLY, Asian girls and women have a great option for Halloween—Lara Jean Covey from the Netflix movie, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.
When Asian Women Are Harassed for Marrying Non-Asian Men (The Cut): Speaking of Asian women…yes, this happens.
Can You Copyright a Quilt? (The Nation): It’s a good question. These African-American artisans from Gee’s Bend, AL have created gorgeous, vibrant, geometrically-patterned quilts, which have been shown in museums across the U.S. and have even been featured on stamps. It’s an interesting question about art and the commercialization of art and who ultimately benefits.
Ina Garten Knows Exactly What She Wants (The Cut): “The vanilla brioche pudding from Ina Garten’s new cookbook, Cook Like a Pro, contains eight egg yolks and four cups of half-and-half.” YES. I kind of love Ina and the unabashed way she cooks and trusts her gut.
It's Okay to Be Good and Not Great (Outside): Even though you / we may rationally know that this is true, it’s still so damn hard sometimes.
What I’ve Been Listening to and Watching
Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc.: An investigative podcast from the Boston Globe’s Spotlight Team about Aaron Hernandez, the Patriot’s star tight end who was convicted of murder and died by suicide in 2017 while in jail.
