Out of Office
This summer has been about taking a step back. For the first time in a loooooong time, I actually took time off. Like no computer (OK, mostly), minimal phone, no deadlines for a whole month š±ā£ Iāve been exploring new-to-me trails, jumping into ice-cold lakes, surfing, running, and reading a lot of books.
ā£
As a freelancer, it scares me to say no and slow down. What if my editors forget about me? What if thereās no more work ever in my life?? ā£In the back of my mind, Iām afraid that Iām going to slip down some imaginary ladder and disappear, that Iām going to āgive up my spotā to...I don't even know what.Ā
ā£
While sitting back down at my desk after three weeks away was rough, I didnāt forget how to write and my editors remembered who I was. It made me realize how much of my stress is self-induced, leaving me constantly feeling depleted and tired. ā£
But Iām learning I can choose not to be stressed and constantly buzz with low-level anxiety. I know, huge revelation but itās one thatās finally starting to sink in.Ā

What Iāve Been Reading
Allyson Felix finds maternity protection with new apparel sponsor (NBC Sports): Athleta stepped up and announced Felix as their first sponsored athlete. Not only is it great that thereās a new player in the sport, but her ācontract and compensation is consistent whether Felix is or is not competing, including āfull protection during maternityāā and embraces Felix as a holistic athlete.
The Recovery I Needed (Amelia Boone): I know this made the rounds when it first came out but if you haven't read it, it's an important read. Obstacle racing champ and ultra runner Amelia opens up about her 20-year battle with anorexia while in the thick of recovery. It's a perspective that you don't often hear about and it's an important one. Here's a good (and helpful) companion piece from Runner's World on how we can start to shift the dialogue around eating and body and tips on what to say and do.
How Taffy Brodesser-Akner Thrives on Stress (Real Simple): While I do love routine, this gets at everything that drives me bonkers about the whole self-care movement and what we should be doing to āclear our mindsā (says the yoga teacher) and how we can miss so much as a result.
USWNT used innovative period tracking to help player performance at World Cup (ABC News): THIS is the potential when we have female-specific training and nutrition protocols.
Weāre at Peak Newsletter, and I Feel Fine (Vanity Fair): And podcastsĀ too.
Every Woman Runner Knows the Man Who Won't Be Passed (Outside): Well, if this isnāt the truth.
āI Hope Youāre Wellā (NY Times): And clearly I need to stop using this phrase.
Lizzoās Tiny Desk Concert (NPR): And if youāre looking for a way to procrastinate and you havenāt watched this yet, do it.Ā
And lots of books: Digital Minimalism, Conversations with Friends, Normal People, I Miss You When I Blink, More Than Words, and The Nightingale.Ā
Lastly, if you want or need a little reminder of the beauty of nature, watch these twoĀ videos. Two photographers hiked more than 200 miles over the course of 10 months in Yosemite National Park, hunting down the most beautiful views to create two epic time-lapse videos.
