There's no place like home
You guys, it’s been a whirlwind two weeks.
First up was a work trip to Hawaii, home for 30-ish hours, then Chicago for work for four days. (I’m writing this at the airport when I really should be finishing off an article I have to file tomorrow.) My body is confused by the changing temperature and time zones, and I’ve never craved my own bed and apartment more.
But I’m not going to lie—the trip to Hawaii was pretty fun. As some of you know, I love surfing (even though I personally stink at surfing) and I love following professional surfing. I was beyond excited to have the opportunity to be on the North Shore during the biggest surf competition of the year-the Billabong Pipe Masters, the last event on the world championship tour and of the Vans Triple Crown. And I get to write about it.
{Hi, Julian!}
It was hard not to fangirl when I met some of my favorite surfers on tour but I managed to pull myself together to interview John John Florence, Gabriel Medina, Julian Wilson, and Jordy Smith. I love getting a behind the scenes look at how they put together and pull off big sporting events.
From 80 degrees and sunny weather, Chicago was a cold wake-up call. It’s cold here and I spent the majority of my time in a conference room. The end.
I can’t wait to get home and spend some time with my kids. Hope you all have a good weekend too!
What I’ve Written
Just a couple of new things have made their way to the interwebs including this one on how to avoid catching a bad mood and this one on when to drop the L-word. And, when you’re traveling this holiday season and find yourself starving and stuck in an airport, bus station, train station, or rest plaza with no choice except for McDonald’s, here’s what to order on the menu.
If you happen to still receive PARADE magazine in your weekend paper, check out page 13 for a profile on Becky Calder, the first female fighter pilot to graduate from the Navy's Fighter Weapons School aka Top Gun. It's a [much] shortened version of the story that appeared online in July.
What I'm Reading
Why are America’s Farmers Killing Themselves in Record Numbers? (The Guardian) << A long read but a really, really good and important story. If you read one thing on this list, read this.
Harvey Weinstein Is My Monster Too (The New York Times) << “But why do so many of us, as female artists, have to go to war to tell our stories when we have so much to offer? Why do we have to fight tooth and nail to maintain our dignity?”
The Consumerist Church of Fitness Classes (The Atlantic) << The church of the Sunday run or the church of SoulCycle, right?
Reclaiming My Time: False Starts (Ask Lauren Fleshman) << Honest, real, raw look at what motherhood is like, especially the newborn days.
How To Get Late Payments For Your Freelance Work, No Crowbars Requires (Poytner) << Because everyone deserves to be paid for their work.
The 5 Best Toys of All Time (Wired) << If you’re still looking for a gift, this list is the best.
I’m Too Burned Out to Make Resolutions—& That’s Just Fine By Me (Refinery29) << Granted, this piece was written in January 2017 but it rings true for me right now as we approach the end of 2017. Maybe more on that in the next newsletter. “But there’s a softening taking place in me, maybe one that can only come with age and experience, that insists less upon hustling and struggling and proving — and much more on listening, learning, and allowing. It requires a different kind of discipline than I’ve felt in years previous but no less important.”
What I’ve Been Watching and Listening to
Heavyweight. Thanks to a recommendation from Allie (@vitatrain4life), I have a new favorite podcast. It’s funny and heartbreaking and SO uncomfortable at times but really good.
I also finished Stranger Things last night. I’m not sure how I felt about this season. The episodes didn’t seem to hold together the same way that the first season did and parts just felt a little *too* ridiculous.
